BCC delivers Childcare SVQs to South Asian women’s project in Edinburgh.
NARI Kallyan Shangho (NKS) is a health and welfare project for South Asian women and children living in Edinburgh. “At NKS they firmly believe that a happy woman is a happy family”.
Edinburgh Workforce Development fully funded the candidates, all South Asian women with English as a second or third language after Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali.
Four SVQ Level 2 candidates work as volunteer nursery assistants within the setting and successfully completed within the year. Nazish Raza explained “Doing this course has helped me learn a lot of new skills, but mainly it has developed my confidence and self esteem when communicating with the children and their parents”.
Irum, who completed her Level 3 qualification, works full time in the nursery at NKS, explained “I never thought I could complete this qualification and was apprehensive to start the course, but with lots of support from my assessor I have worked very hard and can’t believe I have finished”.
These candidates have brought diversity into the tutorial group where we have discussed issues surrounding background, culture and religion. They have supported each other, translating terminology from one language to another, not only to develop their own understanding but to express thoughts, feelings and needs to their assessor.
Since completing their qualifications all four Level 2 candidates have applied to commence SVQ Level 3 and Irum Rizwan Ashfao has applied to commence SVQ Level 4.
This group of Childcare workers have demonstrated a tremendous commitment to training and development while working and bringing up their families.
